Coolio’s real name is Arts Leon Ivy, Jr., who was born on August 1, 1963, in Compton, California. His father, Arts Lyon Ivy Sr., was a carpenter, and his mother, Jackie Slater, worked in a factory. He comes from a broken home where his parents divorced when he was just 11 years old. While at school, he joined a street gang, Baby Corps, and posed a threat to the school.

He attended Compton Community College, where he became interested in rap in high school. When he was 17, he was jailed for several months for stealing money. Coolio also had a crack cocaine addiction that led to his recovery.

To stay away from drugs, he returned to his music career and did various strange jobs. Coolio has a brother, Malik Sturgut, who is also an actor.
