Product Description

Translated by Lisa Davidson and Elizabeth Ayre

This remarkable and beautiful book, its fascinating text coordinated with lavish illustrations, documents the period in civilization when the inhabitants of the Old World began to open their minds to exploration of the "Sea of Darkness" to reveal the truths of the New World. Fran ois Bellec, one of the world's foremost experts in the field of maritime exploration and history has assembled a unique document spanning five centuries. Here, taken straight from their intimate logbooks, are the extraordinary eyewitness accounts of these early adventurers as the New World first appeared on their horizon. Testaments to their courage and confidence, as well as their misgivings and fears, these accounts detail sea voyages that, while often seen as civilizing missions, were also full of mercenary intent, violence and destruction.

Bellec's seamless text and stunning images magnificently convey the sense of wonder and excitement that new sights and experiences inspire. This volume is sure to transport readers.

Fran ois Bellec was the director of the Maritime Museum in Paris from 1980 to 1997 and is currently the President of the Maritime Museum of la Rochelle, the Administrator and Treasurer of the Oceanographic Institute, a member of the High Commission of Historical Monuments, and consultant to the Commissioner of the French Pavilion at World Expo in Lisbon. He is a member of the French and Portuguese Marine Academies, of the Central Commission for UNESCO and of the French National Arts Society. He has written extensively in the field of maritime exploration and history.
