Before his exile from the Soviet Union in 1980 Vassily Aksyonov was one of his country’s most famous writers. He was a success virtually from the start of his career due to his entertaining, colloquial style and his understanding of the post-Stalinist generation. In the Salingeresque “A Ticket to the Stars” and other works he became the artistic spokesman for that generation.
