Virtually all of the material presented in this volume appears in English translation for the first time. Michael Green’s general introduction as well as the prefaces to the individual authors place the dramas and the critics into a cultural and historical perspective, thereby giving the reader a sense of the polemics and searching that characterize Russian drama of the Symbolist period.
