  1. A rich, moving mystery Review by Katy

A Quiet Belief in Angels is a rich, beautifully written novel, at once a mystery and an elegiac tale of a loss of childhood innocence. In 1939, when Joseph Vaughan's twelve-year-old classmate Alice is brutally raped and murdered, life in his small Georgia town is turned upside down. But as the murderer continues to prey on girls in Augusta Falls, Joseph and his friends form "The Guardians", a group dedicated to protecting the young girls of his town. His failure and his changing world continue to plague him, and he narrates from present-day New York his continued attempts to find the murderer and deal with his own guilt and loss.

Ellory's tale is a riveting mystery that insists on exploring the destruction wreaked on this small Southern town not only by these seemingly inexplicable murders, but also by the horrors of World War II. His beautifully descriptive language is full of metaphors that evoke the smells and sounds of the South, and he allows his characters to tell their own stories, giving force and truth to the events and the atmosphere of the story. Joseph's narration is mournful and reflective, giving this thriller a weight and power that is deeply affecting. (Posted on 9/14/09)

  2. Not to be missed by fans of thrillers AND literary historical fiction! Review by A New Fan

I was blown away by this novel. Thrillers are not my favorite genre and honestly, I picked up this book just because I had heard so much buzz about it. I expected to read maybe 15 pages only so I could say I tried, but before I knew it, I was 50 pages deep and couldn't put it down! Alan Furst has a blurb on the back saying "RJ Ellory is a uniquely gifted, passionate and powerful writer, and the quality of his prose- every word, every sentence - lifts A QUIET BELIEF IN ANGELS far above genre." I couldn't agree more! Although this book does have a compulsively readable mystery plot, I feel like it's just as much a very literary historical fiction novel. The voices, the time and place, the details - all were just stunning. (Posted on 9/14/09)
