Orest Somov was one of Russia’s first professional men of letters, whose livelihood was almost exclusively dependent upon the very meager rewards which might be won by the pen. From 1820 until his death Somov was active in the St. Petersburg literary world as a writer, journalist, critic, editor and publisher.
