Product Description

The first collection of Ken Miller's unnervingly direct photographs of America's underclass.

Imbued with a hyperreal poignancy, the photographs of Ken Miller reveal the world of America's underclass - street alcoholics and addicts, prostitutes, neo-Nazi skinheads, electroshock patients and the working poor - the same people, real and imagined, who fill such acclaimed works by William T. Vollmann as The Butterfly Stories and Whores For Gloria. In Ken Miller's portraits we meet the inhabitants of the dark side of America's consciousness, who are to him not simply subjects, but, rather, people who exist before and after the shutter blinks. As Vollmann writes, "He comes back to see them, remembers them, calls them by name. They come running, hopping, or hobbling. They love Ken because he gives them pictures. He has pictures for all of them."

Like Walker Evans and Robert Frank, Ken Miller expresses the essence of life on the fringes in an insistently powerful family album of lost souls. In Open All Night, Miller's extraordinary images and Vollmann's unflinching reportage combine to present an unsettling and potently honest document of our time.

"Ken Miller's pictures are relentlessly, mercilessly, bitterly true. The choices and accidental destinies depicted here are all real; as clearly seen and described as anything in the history of the medium."-Jock Sturges

"Ken Miller's photographs suggest a country of improvised families-addresses unknown-and an acquaintance with the night that's closer to Gonet's than to Frost's."-New York Magazine (Critic's Pick)

Ken Miller's work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, Grand Street, Spin, British Esquire, Aperture, Conjunctions, Camera International, and Zyzzyva. His photographs are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco), the Fogg Art Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Ken Miller lives in San Francisco.

William T. Vollmann is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including Fathers and Crows, The Ice Shirt and An Afghanistan Picture Show.
