Product Description

Every Sunday on the Isle of Sark, Mervyn Peake would tell his children stories about pirates, shipwrecks, and the Wild West. He illustrated his spontaneous stories with delightfully vivid drawings of the characters in his tales, but never set down words to go with them. Now, decades after Peake’s death, world-renowned fantasy writer (and friend of the Peakes) Michael Moorcock has written verses to go with Peake’s drawings. This star collaboration--funny, surprising, and haunting by turns--is accompanied by an illuminating and elegiac introduction by Moorcock. Overlook is publishing The Sunday Books to mark the centenary of Peake’s birth, which will be commemorated around the world on July 9, 2011.

Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was a playwright, painter, poet, illustrator, short-story writer, and designer of theatrical costumes, as well as a novelist. Among his many books are the Gormenghast Trilogy (Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone). Overlook publishes these alongside the posthumous sequel Titus Awakes, Peake treasuries such as Peake’s Progress, and his final novel, Mr. Pye in paperback for the first time.

Michael Moorcock is the author of numerous novels including the acclaimed Elric series. He has received the Nebula, World Fantasy, and British Science Fiction awards and is a Grandmaster of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He lives in Bastrop, Texas.

Praise for The Sunday Books:

"It is a match made in fantasy heaven: legendary genre author Michael Moorcock has written a series of verses to go with illustrations drawn by the late Gormenghast creator Mervyn Peake to entertain his children." --The Guardian (UK)

"Peake's world resembles a hybrid of Kafka's claustrophobic castle and the baroque realms that sprang from the imagination of Edward Gorey . . . Peake had a penchant for caricature and surreal imagery in his illustrations and those qualities can be seen in his prose . . . If the world of Gormenghast proves too forbidding for your taste, I dare you not to be charmed by The Sunday Books, which recalls both Babar and Where the Wild Things Are." --The New Yorker's Book Bench Blog

"An intimate window into the home life of a celebrated fantasist." --Publishers Weekly

"Mervyn Peake may be best celebrated for his epic Gormenghast series and his illustrations of Treasure Island and Alice in Wonderland, but his work with Michael Moorcock in The Sunday Books offers stories of pirates, shipwrecks and more and comes with fine drawings. Sixty years after their creation Michael Moorcock invented stories and songs to go with Peake's drawings and thus The Sunday Books evolved to mark the centenary of Peake's birth. Families and all ages will find the color drawings and fun action compelling: fantasy at its best!"--Midwest Book Review
