Product Description

Pottery Decoration displays in glorious detail the work of sixteen very different potters from around the world, whose approaches to surface decoration--one of the most exciting features of modern pottery--represent the diversity of contemporary ceramics. Advances in the quality and supply of raw materials, newly available, stains and underglaze colors, and progress in kiln design have all contributed to the growth of vividly decorated work. The source of it all is still the individual potter's imagination--and this book looks in detail at the work of sixteen top ceramists.

The book covers the various firing ranges: low-temperature ranges; earthenware and the mid-temperatures; stoneware and porcelain; salt-glazed stoneware; and the post-firing application of on-glaze enamels and lusters. All stages in the decorative process are shown, and the sixteen potters cover such topics as handling of form, color, and motif.

Superbly illustrated throughout, with a rich selection from the work of potters from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, this is all the invaluable information that a beginning, intermediate, or advanced potter needs to execute skilled and innovative decorative techniques for pottery.

"John Gibson's book is going to delight potters. This book is a must for any contemporary ceramist...A fine book and a good investment."--National Ceramics Quarterly

"Sumptuously illustrated, combining ideas with information, and insight with description, a must for the innovative potter interested in decorative techniques." --Ceramics Review

John Gibson lives and works on the Danish island of Bornholm. He has been a visiting lecturer at various colleges and pottery societies, and is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association. His work appears in public and private collections worldwide.
