Product Description

For the first time a whole volume has been devoted entirely to close-ups illustrating the magnificent intricacies of high fashion, answering the question, "what's so special about couture " A perfect Chanel button-hole, a beautiful Schiaparelli appliqu , the exquisite braiding on a sleeve by Bill Gibb, and a faultless seam on a Balenciaga jacket - these are just a few examples of the signature details which, combined with the most luxurious fabric and expert construction, elevate couture to an art form.

The 83 close focus photographs resemble abstract works of art themselves. They are accompanied by specially commissioned line drawings of the entire garment, covering everything from buttons, bows and beads to sequins, collars and cuffs.

Although ordered by theme and not chronology, this book is also a history of fashion in the 20th century. In the early part of this century, ultra-fashionable women changed throughout the day from one lavish outfit to another. Their clothes came from workrooms where many hours of skilled craftsmanship were devoted to the construction of each garment. The accent in the second half of the century shifted to easy and instant wardrobes. Most clothes are now mass produced and ready-to-wear, with a limited degree of finish and decoration. In addition to chronicling these changes, this volume also includes the various street styles from youth and music cultures, which have inspired the fashion industry over the years.
