Product Description

In the fifth novel in Harry Sidebottom’s acclaimed Warrior of Rome series, the fierce warrior Marcus Clodius Bastilla returns for another epic mission.

The year is AD 263, and the Roman Empire is in utter turmoil, a violent uprising threatening to shatter the fragile balance of power. Ballista must undertake his most treacherous journey yet and face the most brutal tribe of them all, Heruli—the Eaters of Flesh, the Wolves of the North—and try to turn them against one another. But as Ballista and his troops make their journey, someone—or something—is hunting them, and leaving a trail of mutilated corpses and terror. Ballista is in a foreign land among hostile strangers, but is it possible that the greatest threat may come from within?

As a professor of classical history at Oxford University, Sidebottom draws on his academic knowledge to capture for readers the feel of ancient Rome, from the shouts of the battlefield to the whisperings of the emperor’s inner circle. Rich in detail and filled with suspenseful combat, there’s no better way to transport yourself back to the days of the Roman Empire.

“Harry Sidebottom’s epic tale starts with a chilling assassination, and goes on, and up, from there.” —Mary Beard, author of The Roman Triumph

“[An] action-packed and detail-rich narrative . . . should find an appreciative audience among bloodthirsty battle boys of all ages.” —Publishers Weekly
