Product Description

The Soviet writer Yury Trifonov (1925-81) made a liteary reputation in the West with his acclaimed novel The House of the Embankment and a series of novellas which described the lives of ordinary Muscovites. Trifonov was the leading writer of his gernation in the Soiet Union, the authro of six novels, several collections of stories, four novelas, as well as non-fiction. He became a controversial figure when he broke with the Socialst Realist tradition and began to portray the lives of the urban intelligentsia and middle class with startling candor.

This translation shows how Trifonov broke the rigid formulas of Socialist Realist literature and used his narrative skills to depict the emotional and psychological complexties of contemporary Soviet life, especially the moral choices which his contemporaries faced under one of the most oppressive societies in modern history.
